Benefits of High Solids Epoxy:
* improved 'weatherability'
* water/moisture tolerance
* resistance to blushing and water spotting
* better chemical resistance.
The ring structure (the 'cyclo' part) also provides (in many cases) a bit more structural 'stretch' than the traditional straight chain curing agent. This provides for better 'impact' resistance
The conclusion is that alltop grade, exterior quality, high performance epoxies use a Part B curing agent blend consisting of cycloaliphatics. Thus, checking with your epoxy floor installer for an epoxy product with cycloaliphtics is a good way to judge the quality and future performance of your epoxy floor.
Amazing Garages will only utilize cycloaliphtic based epoxy's on their flooring projects.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
Note: new cement floors have a weak crust of dirt, sand grains and 'crude' that floated to the top of the surface during the cement pour. This weak crust must be removed to get down to the 'real' cement.
In order to ensure a strong bond to the concrete, the do-it-yourself homeowner would need to hire a commercial contractor to prepare the surface. That means the homeowner needs to decide how much surface preparation is needed to get a good bond. Guess wrong and the coating could fail in a few months (or days). You probably will not know if you put in enough effort until after the fact.
Some people like to acid treat (acid etch) the floor with muriatic acids. Generally not officially approved by paint manufactures, it is still popular with many floor coating applicators and 'do it yourselfers'. This acid etches the concrete opening up its pores. Typical "Do-it-yourselfer" problems include disposing of the spent acid and making sure the acid is completely neutralized and removed from the concrete prior to installation of the Epoxy Pride floor system.
Amazing Garages, with their six year (Double the competitions) limited Warranty, uses a combination of diamond grinding and a professional concrete rejuvinator process to prepare the surface of the concrete. Diamond Grinding removes 2-3 mm of the surface material and properly prepares the surface to accept a very strong bond with Epoxy Pride agents.
