The Material Basis of Epoxy Pride: A High Solids, Cycloaliphatic Epoxy

High Solids Epoxy - Some Epoxy's (Most do-it yourself store brands) are thin, water based and lose up to 80% of their "applied thickness" through evaporation.  In fact, they are so thin, much of their inherent abrasion characteristics are due to the underlying concrete surface itself.

It would take up to 15 coats of any water-based epoxy applications to equal a single coating of Epoxy Pride

Once fully cured, Epoxy Pride is 3X harder than the concrete it covers, will maintain its high gloss finish for many, many years, never delaminates (seperation of multiple coatings) due to its single coating process, is able to be walked on within 24 hours, maintains superior resistence to oil, salt, chemicals, etc. and when properly installed provides the greatest resistance to hot tire "pick-up".

Cycloaliphatic Epoxy - There are many types of Epoxy products available on the market today.  It is virtually impossible to consider them as "similar" in quality  once you understand their vast differences and what they mean to you as a homeowner.

Cycloaliphatic Epoxy is the most expensive epoxy available and for some VERY GOOD reasons.

Benefits of High Solids Epoxy:

* improved 'weatherability'

* water/moisture tolerance

* resistance to blushing and water spotting

* better chemical resistance.

The ring structure (the 'cyclo' part) also provides (in many cases) a bit more structural 'stretch' than the traditional straight chain curing agent. This provides for better 'impact' resistance

The conclusion is that all top grade, exterior quality, high performance epoxies use a Part B curing agent blend consisting  of cycloaliphatics. Thus, checking with your epoxy floor installer for an epoxy product with cycloaliphtics is a good way to judge the quality and future performance of your epoxy floor.

Amazing Garages will only utilize cycloaliphtic based epoxy's on their flooring projects.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

Note: new cement floors have a weak crust of dirt, sand grains and 'crude' that floated to the top of the surface during the cement pour. This weak crust must be removed to get down to the 'real' cement.

In order to ensure a strong bond to the concrete, the do-it-yourself homeowner would need to hire a commercial contractor to prepare the surface. That means the homeowner needs to decide how much surface preparation is needed to get a good bond. Guess wrong and the coating could fail in a few months (or days). You probably will not know if you put in enough effort until after the fact.

Some people like to acid treat (acid etch
) the floor with acids. Generally not officially approved by paint manufactures, it is still popular with many floor coating applicators and 'do it yourselfers'. Acid etches the concrete, roughing the top surface.

HOWEVER...For a STRONG bond, the concrete needs to be "opened up",  the coating pressed into the slab itself.

Failure to "open up" the concrete leaves epoxy laying on top of the surface, soon to fail and peel off.

Additional "Do-it-yourselfer" problems include disposing of the spent acid and making sure the acid is completely neutralized/removed prior to installation of the Epoxy Pride floor system.

Amazing Garages, with their six year (Double the competitions) limited Warranty, uses a combination of diamond grinding and a professional concrete rejuvinator to prepare your floor.  Diamond Grinding "opens up" the surface and properly prepares it to accept a very strong bond with Epoxy Pride agents.
